Surf Ski Care and Maintenance Guide

Before Use

  • Allow two weeks after manufacture date for the ski to cure before use
  • Be careful as to how much pressure is applied to the ski via strapping or other means before it is fully cured
  • At the beginning of using the ski in the water, set the proper volume of air in the ski – first cool the ski by placing it in shallow water, then inflate the ski with several deep breaths, then use the bung to stop air escaping.
  • Inflating the ski gives it strength, rigidity, and responsiveness.

Transporting

  • Use a surf ski cover if possible (available from Force Field)
  • If no cover is available, ensure racks are either soft or padded
  • Position roof racks as far apart as possible
  • Carry ski upside down on racks to prevent denting of the hull or use an approved product cradle (available from Force Field)
  • Secure the ski using flat straps (available from Force Field) rather than rope
  • If the ski will be traveling great distances, at highway speed, through high winds, or on roof racks which are close together, use tie-down straps from either end of the ski to the front and rear of the vehicle.

After use

  • Rinse the ski with fresh water – in particular the rudder area, the foot pedals, and the cables – and towel dry
  • Periodically, wax the ski with auto or marine wax – this helps protect the gel coat
  • Periodically, lubricate the foot pedal hinges and cables with an auto or marine lube

Storing

  • Always store with the bung out – the air in the ski will expand and contract as it changes temperature and if not allowed to escape the ski will be severely damaged
  • Store in the shade whenever possible – UV rays will breakdown the gel coat.
  • If no shade is available, use a cover (available from Force Field)
  • Store upside down – to protect the hull, to allow any drainage, and to protect the fin
  • Secure the ski against wind or lay it facing into the wind

Repairs

  • If the ski is damaged while in salt water, remove it as soon as possible, rinse with fresh water, and allow drying fully before repairing
  • Do not allow water to sit inside the ski as it gets absorbed and adds to the weight of the ski
  • Minor chips and scratches may be filled with polyester or epoxy resin
  • Small cracks and dings may be fixed with a fiberglass repair kit
  • More serious damage should be fixed by a professional
